After going on the Tate Modern and West End excursions with CIS Abroad, I developed a passion for the different forms of art expression. My favorite part by far was visiting different galleries, street art displays and performances, and plays.

I really liked the anonymity of being black in London. There weren't really high expectations like I've experienced in the U.S. I still had people go up to me and be like "I love your hair" but there weren't as many expectations for how I wear my hair.

The study-internship gave me balance. I worked a little and gained valuable experience but didn't feel like I was overloaded with a full-time job. I had schoolwork but wasn't stuck in my room writing essays every Friday night. I travelled but also felt like I made London my home. One thing that I loved, in particular, was my internship. Not only did I learn a lot and feel like I gained important professional skills, I also got to know people who actually lived in London. So many tips, tricks, and support came from my co-workers and our clients.

I am currently a senior manager in global comms for Procter and Gamble. I actually connected with my current boss because he also had studied in London, so my study abroad experience definitely helped me land the job. My dream would eventually be to lead the UK communications team and move back to the UK. my study abroad experience was hands down the greatest time of my life.

When you first start your study abroad experience, do not feel pressure to get everything done. Get some rest, maybe go on a walk, and get used to your new space. Studying abroad can be very different, especially the classes, since they all tend to have a different setup. In my situation, I had to attend classes once a week. In some classes, you would have a seminar in a lecture while other classes go for two hours. My favorite class was my art and society class. Most kids studying abroad took that class because I think it's designed for the purpose of learning more about the location. We were able to go to museums every week. You will not be alone in this journey; your CIS Abroad companions will become your family and experience many things with you.

I took Introduction to International Relations Nationalism, Global South Writing, Modern Art in London and study abroad modules which I really enjoyed. The curriculum involved exploring the city and getting to know the culture and environment of London. In the modern art class, we visited galleries. In my creative writing class, we did blogs about where we explored in London on our own as well as assignments that the professor gave us. I really enjoyed the international relations classes because I gained a different perspective than the American perspective on concepts and histories I had learned about in America.

I study at the University of Westminster which is in central London and it's right across from the Baker Street tube station so that was what made it easy to go to my classes. All I would do was hop on the Tube be and take about 5-10 minute ride depending on how busy it was to my classes on Regent Street. I didn't have to go to any of the other campuses so that made my commute easy and living in Melbourne was so convenient.

Studying abroad was one of the best experiences of my life and I highly recommend it to all students. Specifically, I strongly recommend studying abroad in London with the CIS Abroad program for Westminster. London holds so many opportunities, experiences, and culture making it a great place to spend a semester! CIS Abroad organized a number of events that would teach us more about London culture and introduce us to our peers. These events included Afternoon Tea, a weekend trip to Wales, a river cruise on the River Thames, etc. I traveled within and outside of England including places such as Cambridge in England, Italy, Spain, Ireland, France, and more. Studying abroad within Europe was a great decision since there are a number of transportation options to get to other countries since they are within close proximity to one another making traveling affordable and easy.

During my time abroad I got to take classes that were London-specific, these classes not only fulfilled my requirements at UMass but also helped me learn more about the city I was living in during these few months. The classes I took included Modern Art in London, the Holocaust in London, and the Cultural and Popular History of Jack the Ripper. From these classes, I learned more about the history of London and was also given the opportunity to explore the city since many of our sessions were outside of the classroom exploring the city, museums, and galleries.
