About Stirling

Stirling is a quaint, picturesque city that is dripping with history. The narrow cobblestone streets and large fortress will take you back in time. Stirling is also known as the Gateway to the Highlands, and it's where William Wallace, Scotland's national hero, famously defeated the English at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Stirling is the country’s capital for government and higher education, making it an ideal place to study abroad.

Scotland's breathtaking landscapes will truly amaze you—enjoy day trips to the surrounding regions or try to spot the elusive Loch Ness monster in the Scottish Highlands. Don't be spooked, but Stirling is home to the famous Stirling Castle, which is rumored to be haunted!

With a population of 35,000, Stirling offers city comforts in a small, safe environment. You'll find a theater, pubs, restaurants, and clubs. You can easily access the city center from campus by regular bus service, or by walking or biking. The bustling and vibrant cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow are 45 and 30 minutes away by train, respectively. Or, you can snag inexpensive flights to other European destinations.

Studying abroad changed my life in ways I could never put into words - I am more confident, outgoing, and have deepened my love for traveling. It was hard at times to adapt to the “norms” of my new home but these were the times I relied on the incredible friends I had made in Scotland to help me through. CIS Abroad allowed me to learn more about myself in one month than I have in years.

Summer in Scotland
The parts of my CIS Abroad experience that I enjoyed the most were the excursions organized by our site director. The excursions were a great way to learn more about the history and culture of Scotland from a local who really knew the history.

Of all the programs I researched, CIS Abroad was exactly what I was looking for: affordable, accommodating, good safety record, and interesting classes. The staff here in the US and in Scotland were always there when I had a question or concern.

Summer in Scotland
At this river in the middle of Glencoe, Scotland, I sat alone and marveled at the sheer beauty of these rugged mountains. I thought of all the people who had come before to sit at this river and think of the things that came before them. This trip opened my eyes to a Scottish narrative that was passed over in favor of an English one. With new knowledge of ancient peoples and their impact on the modern world, I have a greater appreciation for stories that echo throughout time and how they impact me as an individual.

Stirling is truly a special place in my heart. It is seated at the base of the low highlands which makes it a perfect place to explore nature but the town is super accessible as well as the train station to visit cities or other towns in the highlands. Scotland is full of deeply kind people who truly want to make your experience an enjoyable one and are always happy to help or even just have a conversation with you.

The staff at the University of Stirling are very helpful and welcoming, so I had no difficulty adjusting myself to my new living situation. The classes are also very fun and flexible, with incredibly enthusiastic instructors and an emphasis on learning through experience. I loved going to Edinburgh and Glasgow and seeing how they integrate current art and music and infrastructure to the landscapes and buildings that have been around for centuries. Learning about the locals’ respect for their cultural heritage while championing modern artistic interpretations has been an inspiration for my own interpretation of my culture and seeing the world around me.

I believe some of the most important benefits of study abroad is not only learning and understanding another culture as a whole but experiencing the culture to possibly change your mindset and expand your horizons. I have met people from all parts of the world from all walks of life and it makes you more open minded and culturally aware. For me personally, I learned to value things like sustainability, healthy eating, and the importance of respecting people from all cultures and making an empathetic effort to their unique experiences.
