About San José

San José is the bustling capital of Costa Rica and the place to learn about the country’s fascinating culture. Food, art, and people flow in from all directions. Likewise, you can use the capital as your launching point to discover the rest of this friendly country. Beautiful national parks, picturesque mountain villages, and relaxed beach towns are nearby and easily accessible. Spend your weekends exploring volcanoes, zip-lining through the jungle, or visiting a sloth sanctuary.

As a CIS Abroad student in San José, you'll get to know local Costa Ricans (aka Ticos), who have a friendly, laid-back demeanor. Being minutes from the heart of the Costa Rican capital, you can explore the city with ease. Then, spend the evening with new friends in the Plaza Francia, in the beautiful Barrio Escalante.

Chepe, as the city is known locally, is famed for its National Theater, busy market life, and easy-to-use public transportation. There are plenty of international restaurants, ranging from Lebanese to Italian, in addition to local sodas, where you can eat large helpings of gallo pinto, the delicious national dish. Visitors and residents adore the street food in San José or grabbing a cheap and cheerful meal at Mercado Central. After class, you can head to one of the many local theaters, concert venues, cinemas, or salsa clubs. Then, spend the evening with new friends in the Plaza de la Cultura watching the pigeons and a marimba band. It doesn’t get much better than this.

CIS provided a brilliant network of people so I never felt alone, and everyday was a new adventure. I got to explore a place completely different from anything I could have imagined. It was challenging navigating a new culture, a language I didn't know completely, and a new environment, but that was the beauty of it all. No one goes abroad searching for comfort, but you learn that comfort can be found anywhere, if you know how to look.

Semester in Costa Rica - Universidad Veritas
During my time in Costa Rica, I took Intermediate Conversation and Cultural Photography at Veritas University. I really enjoyed how relaxed the classes were and how the teachers taught us not only Spanish, but also culture and day-to-day life. I was also involved in the biology lab here (BIOMOL) and had fun doing some lab work every week. I got to explore multiple places with my program, such as Manuel Antonio, Curubandé, and Jaco. I went surfing for the first time and got to hike some amazing trails. I highly recommend traveling to Costa Rica for study abroad; it is a beautiful country with beautiful people and memories to make!

I took Spanish for Healthcare Professionals and Conflict Resolution & Healthcare at Universidad Veritas in San Jose, Costa Rica. I really enjoyed how interactive my elective class was; the students often led the class by doing presentations on various topics. We also had a field trip to the local school. My favorite part of the study abroad experience was all the weekend trips. It was awesome to see so many different places in the country. My favorite trip was to Tamarindo and Curubande where I got to take a surf lesson and hike to waterfalls.

Studying abroad enhanced my Spanish-speaking skills, gave me deep friendships, and positively challenged the ways I viewed my own family, culture, and country. I’ve become a better student, sister, daughter, and friend. I can never see the world through the same lenses again. To that I am forever grateful.

This program was amazing, and gave me wanderlust like I've never had before. I gained independence and self-confidence. I came back from Costa Rica knowing more about the world, and more about myself.

The adventures were insane and I couldn't have done them anywhere else besides Costa Rica. The people I met will forever hold a special place in my heart. I became so close with some students and my housemates, but I also met "Ticos" (Costa Ricans) that it almost broke my heart to leave them.

The class weekend trips are indescribable. We went to the most extraordinary places, places that weren't even open to the public and did real research that would be submitted into actual databases.

CIS Abroad was so helpful with advising me on which program to choose. I lived with a host family, which was an amazing way to learn and be a part of the culture. Also, CIS Abroad has some of the most affordable programs out there.

Summer in Costa Rica
My experience in Costa Rica was absolutely amazing: the beach trips, living with my host family, the food, and the classes I took at the university. I honed my language skills and I know so much more Spanish than I did before.

The academics at Veritas are great and the classes are small, so the teachers get to give a lot of one on one attention. Your host family will help you learn Spanish and immerse you in the culture, from food to music to dancing.

I loved that the program didn't require Spanish language experience! Though that did make communication with my host family (who were amazing but didn’t speak English) a little challenging. I'd recommend learning a few phrases before you go!

It's easy to shy away from challenges and discomfort, but powering through those moments is what allows us to grow. Studying abroad teaches us to become comfortable with the uncomfortable, and become better people because of it.
