About Florence

Florence (Firenze in Italian) is a culturally vibrant city located in the heart of Italy’s Tuscany region. Around every corner you’ll encounter jaw-dropping architecture, like the terra-cotta-domed Florence Cathedral. The mild weather makes it ideal for exploring the city on foot—we recommend getting lost so you can meander the streets and interact with the friendly locals.

Thanks to the city's small size, you'll feel like a local in no time. You can explore the historic city center is quite walkable and you can reach many iconic landmarks and beyond in less than 30 minutes. Florence is also an art lover’s dream! Must dos: visit the Galleria dell’Accademia—home to Michelangelo’s David, the world-renowned Galleria degli Uffizi, and the iconic Duomo. Explore the lesser-known Boboli Gardens and Palazzo Pitti. Art is a great way to soak in the culture and history of this wonderful city. The views from the Ponte Vecchio and Piazzale Michelangelo will steal your heart, but the food, culture, and people will make you want to stay forever.

To explore outside the city, you can easily hop on a bus and head up to the hillside town of Fiesole. You'll catch a full panoramic view of Florence and enjoy the peaceful Etruscan ruins. Siena, Lucca, Pisa, San Gimignano, and other Tuscan villages are also easily accessible by bus and train. If you have the travel bug, high speed trains and nearby airports make it easy and affordable to travel to Milan, Venice, Rome, and beyond.

The best way to experience Florence is simply to wander through its wonders. This is how you'll find the hidden gems not mentioned in any guidebook.

Summer in Florence
My life is forever changed after studying abroad. I'm leaving Italy more experienced, independent and happy then I have ever been before. Study abroad showed me that I can do anything! I thank the experience for bringing me new life long friends, and opportunities that I would have never received without it. Classes taught me to respect and be excited to learn about new cultures and see things from new perspectives. With every excursion I went on, it taught me to show gratitude towards everything I was ABLE to do while studying. I now strive to make the most of everything I do.

I met so many amazing people on this journey in Italy. I traveled to six different cities in three weeks with people in the CIS Abroad group. We came from all types of backgrounds but had one thing in common, which was to see places that change our perspective on life. This experience changed my outlook on life and gave me the chance to experience another culture.

Summer in Florence
After CIS Abroad's pre-departure orientation, I felt like I was an expert on the culture of Italy, what to pack, and what to do once I got there. I really think it helped minimize my culture shock, because they informed us so well before leaving.

Studying abroad helped me to realize that I am capable of so much more than I had ever imagined. I was also further awakened to my role in the global community and the responsibilities that come with that. It was an irreplaceable experience.

I have always been a huge planner, but ever since studying abroad, I have learned to be more flexible and to go with the flow. Things don’t always go as planned but everything works out in the end.

Summer in Florence
My time abroad with CIS was everything I could have ever dreamed of! In the weeks leading up to my program, I was given all the information I needed and my extra questions were always answered in a timely manner. Once arriving, I found it easy to transition from being picked up from the airport by our program leader to having a very helpful orientation around the city the next day. I felt confident even from the start of my trip that CIS would always be there for me. There were always dinner reservations made for us as well as other fun things like boat rides or walking tours! Our program leader also always made sure we knew what was going on in the city as well as all over Europe which always helped me feel safe. While being in Italy for 9 weeks, CIS always went above and beyond to make sure that all of their students were being taken care of from the moment we got there until the moment we left!

I enjoyed how willing to help CIS was during the initial process of applying and getting ready to go. Having someone on-site was extremely helpful as well.

This program helped me step outside of my comfort zone by going on events that CIS put on for Florence, Italy. We did ice cream walks, went to installation museums and cooking classes. You have so much support and CIS really does a good job making you feel at home. Don't be afraid to take a walk around the city and find something interesting through the program, of school, or with friends.

I lived at The Social Hub and I really enjoyed living here. It's allowed me to meet some amazing friends who all live on the same floor as me. I also love how The Social Hub organizes a lot of events included workout sessions, community kitchen events and I also really enjoy the cafe downstairs for cappuccinos and croissant before class. They also have a nice restaurant with a pretty good menu.
